Beyond letting go

God is really trying to tell me something lately.

"The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord."
Job 1.21

A few weeks ago, one of my dearest friends hurt me deeply by an inappropriate judgment call.  She somehow developed a prejudice against me because of my health issues, and after drawing inaccurate conclusions, she made a hasty decision that ended up hurting both of us.  I don't know what will happen with our relationship, but we haven't talked since that day.  I don't know if we ever will again.

A scene in Grey's Anatomy last night reminded me of my life lately.

Teddy told Henry, the man she signed marriage paperwork with, solely to provide him with health insurance, "Life and death decisions, it wasn't part of our deal."

Henry replied with, "I'm 42 years old. I lost my mom and dad four and five years ago, respectively.  My sister lives in Prague. which is a longer story than you want to hear.  When I talk to her I tend to err on the side of, 'How are the kids, and everything here is great,' because she's broke and because my health thing is, it's exhausting.

"I used to have a best friend, but he married a woman who made sure I knew that my health was exhasting.  And because I kept maxing out my insurance policies, I had to switch jobs about 9 times in the past 5 years, so I've always just been the new guy in the cubicle by the bathroom who takes a lot of sick days.  It's not a guy people make friends with."

That scene reminded me of how my health situation has been exhausting - not only for myself, but for everyone around me.  It hasn't been for the flighty or faint of heart.  And because of my unpredictable health, I've been in college for 6 years now.  As soon as I get used to a group of classmates, I have to take a semester off for one reason or another.  I've been with maybe 3 or 4 different tracks of students, and it's hard.  Very hard.  Then I lost my fiancé in January and just had my best friend reject me because of my health.  That's painful.

You know, I've been asked why I am so honest, transparent, and often painfully candid on my blog.  My answer is this: I do not want to be an open book.  I'm actually a private person.  But I've been doing this a few years, and while I enjoy writing and connecting, that's not the point of it all.  The reason I do this is the idea that, if my story - challenges and overcomings, fears and dreams - can in any way make the road easier for one person, or even just make them feel less alone on the way, then I'm gladly and humbly obliged.

My journey recovering from losing my fiancé last January 30 is probably what I get questioned about the most.  It's been messy, and in a perfect world, I would have handled it better. If you remember, I almost lost my life because of it, and I did completely destroy several months of my life all on my own. I'm not proud of how things have transpired, and I definitely wish I could have coped better, but I'm not going to hide one day of this past almost-year. In many comments and emails, I've learned that my journey has not been rare, odd, or abnormal. There's so many other people going through similar losses and handling it in similar ways. We are going through this together, and I appreciate that. I truly believe we learn and grow from each other.

So with that said, my cousin sent me an email this morning that hit my heart hard. She has dealt with a lot of things I cannot imagine dealing with.  She lost hope in relationships, almost in life, and is now engaged to one of sweetest men I've ever met. She's in so much joy and bliss, and as close as we are, words cannot express how happy I am for her.  It all transpired so quickly and unexpectedly - so wonderfully - when things were really at their worst. I have no doubt that their relationship is a miracle of God, hope He sent to save them.

In her email, she reminded me of this: "It takes the jerks in our lives and the heartache and misery to really appreciate the real love that has, or will, come into our lives."

While in my recent situations, I've found that truth easy to forget, I know it to be true in all cases. Take my transplant for example. I never really took life for granted, but now that I've been through hell just to take the breaths I take today, I'm so much more grateful for and appreciative of the gift of life and the preciousness of each moment I've been given.

My cousin also quoted her aunt who told her years ago, "The best revenge is to be happy." When we are upset and hurt, we give the power to those people or situations who have upset us or broken our hearts.

In the past months, my mom has told me many times that I'm only letting the other side win when I let them upset me.  It's my loss, not theirs.  Being sad and miserable does nothing to get back at those who hurt us, and it does nothing to advance our situation.  Instead, it only wrecks our own lives.

I guess that's one of the reasons I've fought so hard to bounce back from my surgery, why I pushed myself to go back to school this past week, 8 months early. It's why I have new friends and am so into trying new things, forgetting about my fears and practicing diving into life head-first.

Additionally, as my sweet friend Jenn reminded me in an email last week, "Sometimes we can allow situations and even people to keep us from experiencing the fullness that God has planned for our lives... We do need to let go and let God have it - all of it - if we really want to see Him in His fullest."

Gulp.

Yet so true.

This morning, I read a post at (in)courage, one of my favorite blogs. The writers are a large group of Christian women, and they take turns posting inspirational stories.
Today Brooke Keith posted "Learning to Let Go." She told of times when she had to take things away from her tiny baby, Jack. She took things away from him, such as dirty pieces of food, smalls object (choke risk), and a screwdriver that had fallen onto the floor, all out of love and protection.

Each time, Brooke was surprised at his sturdy grip, and she noted the crocodile tears that would fall from his deep, blue eyes. Then she realized "Jack hasn’t fallen far from the tree. I think of things that I too work so hard to reach. Things I feel obligated to. Things I really like, things that make me feel safe, comfortable, and successful. I watch as God pulls them from my hands. I sit in tears and cry 'MINE!'

"He doesn’t understand does He? I need this! I want this! It belongs to me!

"But God gently wrestles with me ... 'Let go.'

"Though we’ve been here before ... I seem to forget with each new circumstance that God knows what He’s doing. That it all always works out. That He closes windows to open doors no man can shut.

"I can’t always see what things are good for me even when they feel good inside my hands and even better inside my life. He knows when I’ve picked up a good Cheerio ... and He also knows when I’ve picked up a Fruit Loop that the chihuahua pulled from the neighbor’s trash bin. He sees the dangers of sharp emotions and situations that could cut me deep.

"I reach for the thing I want...

"But it’s no good.

"God slides across the kitchen, socks sliding quickly against the freshly swept floor. He lifts me swiftly. The no-good thing falling to the wayside. I protest ... But He does it because He loves me.

"My grasp loosens in anticipation for God’s something better lined up in the cupboard.

"God beckons softly 'Let go.'"

My sweet friends, God does have something even "better lined up in the cupboard." May we learn to let go. God can't give us what we need if our hands are full of what we shouldn't have or what we're simply holding onto because we don't know what else to do.  Or perhaps we do know what else to do, but we're just afraid.  What a hard place to be.

May we obtain true joy in our Lord. May He give us renewed senses of purpose and bless us with happiness anew. While being happy may be the best revenge, may we forsake revenge in the truest sense of the word. May we be humble and grateful to our God for taking away something that was either dangerous to us or in the way of something better.  Let us lay down what is clouding our vision, the high mound of people and situations that interferes with our view.  Beyond it - can't you see? - is God in his fullest.

Again, those comforting words,

"The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord."

Already gone

It's been 10 1/2 months since a broken love completely tore my world apart, and I'm reliving it through the life of my sister with the added misery of enduring my first single holiday season in six years.  I wish I could tell my grieving sister that the loneliness, the bitterness, the love goes away with time, but it doesn't.  You can tell yourself whatever you want, but accepting a new lifestyle, releasing the past, and wanting to go on with your life is so much easier said than done.  Love is a miserable, terrible thing, yet somehow when we have it, it's the air that keeps us alive.

Let us live and let go.  Let us go on, heads held high, because otherwise, we'll miss what comes next.

Here's to moving on.

Remember all the things we wanted
Now all our memories, they're haunted
We were always meant to say goodbye
Even with our fists held high
It never would have work out right,
We were never meant for do or die
I didn't want us to burn out
I didn't come here to hurt you, now I can't stop

     I want you to know
     That it doesn't matter
     Where we take this road
     But someone's gotta go
And I want you to know
You couldn't have loved me better
But I want you to move on
     So I'm already gone

Looking at you makes it harder
But I know that you'll find another
That doesn't always make you wanna cry
It started with the perfect kiss then
We could feel the poison set in
"Perfect" couldn't keep this love alive

You know that I love you so
I love you enough to let you go
     That it doesn't matter
     Where we take this road
     But someone's gotta go
And I want you to know
You couldn't have loved me better
But I want you to move on
     So I'm already gone

Remember all the tings we wanted
Now all our memories, they're haunted
We were always meant to say goodbye
You can't make it feel right
When you know that it's wrong
     I'm already gone, already gone
     There's no moving on
     So I'm already gone

          - Kelly Clarkson

So to my sister... I want to say that it's okay this hurts like what.  It will get better with time, but there will always be a hole in your heart.  Good luck finding "safe" movies to watch.  :) But really - it's okay to cry, stalk, spy, scream, sleep, wallow, starve, binge, shop, burn, rip, hoard, and whatever else this crazy process entails.  You won't be able to sleep at night, and your mind will turn until your stomach is turning, too.  You will be replaced, yet you will replace him, too.  You'll want him back, then you'll want him gone.  You won't know what you want.  You won't know what you should want, either.  It's okay.

Just make sure you surround yourself with good friends, and try not to wallow.  Don't shut people out - they're only trying to love you.  Let yourself grieve as you need and move on as best as you can.  Don't let too much life pass you by - there's a whole world of new, even better loves, passions, and opportunities to chase.

And never forget - boys (and fiances!) may come and go, but sisters are forever.  I love you.

Love the way you lie

Just gonna stand there
And watch me burn
But that's alright
Because I like
The way it hurts
Just gonna stand there
And hear me cry
But that's alright
Because I love
The way you lie
I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie

I can't tell you what it really is
I can only tell you what it feels like
And right now there's a steel knife
In my windpipe
I can't breathe
But I still fight
While I can fight
As long as the wrong feels right
It's like I'm in flight
High of a love
Drunk from the hate
It's like I'm huffing paint
And I love it the more that I suffer
I sufficate
And right before im about to drown
She resuscitates me
She hates me
And I love it
Wait
Where you going
I'm leaving you
No you ain't
Come back
We're running right back
Here we go again
It's so insane
Cause when it's going good
It's going great
I'm Superman
With the wind in his bag
She's Lois Lane
But when it's bad
It's awful
I feel so ashamed
I snap
Who's that dude
I don't even know his name
I laid hands on her
I'll never stoop so low again
I guess I don't know my own strength

Just gonna stand there
And watch me burn
But that's alright
Because I like
The way it hurts
Just gonna stand there
And hear me cry
But that's alright
Because I love
The way you lie
I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie

You ever love somebody so much
You can barely breathe
When you're with them
You meet
And neither one of you
Even know what hit 'em
Got that warm fuzzy feeling
Yeah them chills
Used to get 'em
Now you're getting sick
Of looking at 'em
You swore you've never hit 'em
Never do nothing to hurt 'em
Now you're in each other's face
Spewing venom
And these words
When you spit 'em
You push
Pull each other's hair
Scratch, claw, bit 'em
Throw 'em down

Pin 'em
So lost in the moments
When you're in 'em
It's the rage that took over
It controls you both
So they say it's best
To go your separate ways
Guess that they don't know ya
Cause today
That was yesterday
Yesterday is over
It's a different day
Sound like broken records
Playin' over
But you promised her
Next time you'll show restraint
You don't get another chance
Life is no Nintendo game
But you lied again
Now you get to watch her leave
Out the window
Guess that's why they call it window pane

Just gonna stand there
And watch me burn
But that's alright
Because I like
The way it hurts
Just gonna stand there
And hear me cry
But that's alright
Because I love
The way you lie
I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie

Now I know we said things
Did things
That we didn't mean
And we fall back
Into the same patterns
Same routine
But your temper's just as bad
As mine is
You're the same as me
But when it comes to love
You're just as blinded
Baby please come back
It wasn't you
Baby it was me
Maybe our relationship
Isn't as crazy as it seems
Maybe that's what happens
When a tornado meets a volcano
All I know is
I love you too much
To walk away though
Come inside
Pick up your bags off the sidewalk
Don't you hear sincerity
In my voice when I talk
Told you this is my fault
Look me in the eyeball
Next time I'm
I'll aim my fist
At the dry wall
Next time
There will be no next time
I apologize
Even though I know it's lies
I'm tired of the games
I just want her back
I know I'm a liar
If she ever tries to leave again
I'mma tie her to the bed
And set the house on fire

Just gonna stand there
And watch me burn
But that's alright
Because I like
The way it hurts
Just gonna stand there
And hear me cry
But that's alright
Because I love
The way you lie
I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie

Impossible

I remember years ago
Someone told me I should take
Caution when it comes to love

I did, I did
And you were strong and I was not
My illusion, my mistake
I was careless, I forgot
I did
And now when all is done
There is nothing to say
You have gone and so effortlessly
You have won

You can go ahead tell them

Tell them all I know now
Shout it from the roof top
Write it on the sky, Love
All we had is gone now
Tell them I was happy
And my heart is broken
All my scars are open
Tell them what I hoped would be

Impossible, impossible
Impossible, impossible

Falling out of love is hard
Falling for betrayal is worst
Broken trust and broken hearts
I know, I know
Thinking all you need is there
Building faith on love is worst
Empty promises will wear
I know (I know)
And know when all is gone
There is nothing to say
And if you're done with embarrassing me
On your own you can go ahead tell them

Tell them all I know now
Shout it from the roof top
Write it on the sky, Love
All we had is gone now
Tell them I
was happy
And my heart is
broken
All my scars are
open
Tell them what I hoped would be

Impossible, impossible
Impossible, impossible

I remember years ago
Someone told me I should take
Caution when it comes to love
I did

Last night

Last night, I gave him a chance.  He gave us a chance.  Not the same us we'd been for 5.5 years, the new us we're trying to become.

I had two of my girls all day, so I hurried home to change out of my marker-, juice-, lactose-free milk-, germ-infested clothing into something cute.  I know I can't have him back, but I could at least look attractive, right?  I paired black leggings with a black tank, neckline encrusted with chunky stones and jewels, and I found my new sequin-covered Steve Madden flats to match.  It was cold, so I put on a denim jacket that still fit from before I  lost nearly thirty pounds.  I pulled back my newly-highlighted hair and threw on the rings I now wear in place of the $12,000 piece of rock that meant forever.  I half-heartedly put on more makeup.  Did I really think it'd stay on the entire night?

He got here, late from work, as always.  I refrained from texting back, "Predictable."  I got in the car like I had about a million times before, buckled my seatbelt, and locked my own door.  I got a 3 minute version of his last three months, and then he asked, "What's new with you?"  Umm, my doctor raised my meds since I can't stop crying over you?  I take really strong pills at night to make me sleep since all I can think of is you?  Or how about Sunday, Mother's day - did you even remember your mom without me there to nag?  Even though you had been a stranger, you still knew my health was deteriorating, I had lost 20% of my weight just in 90 days, you knew I was going to Florida in a few days, and you knew you had a lot of apologizing to do.  You asked if I was there to hear you speak at our church youth group.  I told you I made sure to slip in and out so you'd never know I was there.  I cringed at each word you spoke.  Meanwhile, how could you stand up there, all together, at least pretending so well, when there I was in about a million pieces?

You said you were ready to be friends, and I said I didn't know if I could.  You'd taken too much from me, too soon.  I asked what you promised me.  You've always said I ask weird things.

I don't know what the future for us holds.  I know what it was supposed to hold, though, and am I wrong for being bitter?  What's so wrong about having everything - so much I never even dreamed about, such perfection - and then not wanting to let it go months after it'd been stripped away?  Can you blame me?  The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord?  I only forced myself to say it.

I eased into a comfort I'd felt each of our previous days together.  I told you what I was afraid of.  I told you what I needed help with.  I told you I wanted you to get over worrying about your mom and let me come eat dinner at your grandma's.  I told you I was falling faster than anyone knew.  I told you I hated going to your sister's wedding shower.  It felt like cruel and unusual punishment, and I did it for her and her alone.

For miles, I looked out my window and sobbed.

"Is this hard for you?"

Do you realize that was a dumb question?

We couldn't figure out where to go, mainly because I didn't want to go anywhere looking like I'd just lost everything I'd ever had.  So you pulled over.  10 minutes from my house, in a stripmall parking lot, there we sat.  You let me plug my iPod in, and I hoped "Need You Now" wouldn't start playing or else I'd lose it for sure.  Instead, almost every equally torturous songs came on, and before I knew it, I had crawled across the car and begun sobbing in your lap, sort of how I did that night you told me it'd be the last.  I sobbed and shook and gasped for air, and you rubbed my back and put your head on mine.  A few times you put your face in my hair like you did when you used to gently kiss my head.  Is that what you were doing last night?  I couldn't tell, but if it was, shame on you. Or thank you.  It's reassuring to know you're still head over heels in love, trying and pretending not to be.  We're pulling ourselves apart as hard as we can but quite frankly, neither of us are much good at it.  I took your other arm, and like instinct, you put it around me and just sat and let me lose control.

Finally I asked you to take me home, and you did.  Between all of the Ativan I had took during our night together and my sleeping pills, I was able to get some rest, but it sure didn't feel like it when my alarm went off at 5:40 and I subsequently drove my car into oncoming traffic and about exploded my tire.

One of these days we're going to figure out how to be really close friends.  One of these days, what we had can make me happy, not send me into a fit of hysteria.  After all, you promised a close friendship is what you want, and it doesn't take a promise to know it's what I want more than life itself.  I need you in a way that I need air, in a way that your heart has to pump blood out to your body if you ever want to survive.  Years and years ago, I told you I'd never let you in, but you kept pushing.  And now there's no turning back while every force in the world is screaming, you need to go back.  What do you do with 5 and a half years?  Just give them up like that?  Not exactly possible.  Build a friendship on them? Easier said than done.

People tell me it's okay, I can do better.  It's okay, he bothered you sometimes anyways.  They say you're just a guy like every other "stupid" one out there, but do they know how maddening those statements make me feel?  I want to put up a huge sign that says "FIVE AND A HALF YEARS AND IT WAS PERFECT." You had every part of my soul - even when I pushed you away - for five and a half years.  Tell the naysayers how much it all meant to me, to us, and watch them fall away.  Sure you didn't lock the car doors, you didn't get your haircut until you thought it was too long, you were always late coming home from work, and sometimes you watched TV shows I had to pretend to enjoy.  But I never imagined I'd wish I had each of those things back.  And now?  For just one of those things?  I'd trade the air that I breathe.

Thank you for letting me sob in your arms last night just like I used to do.  Thank you for talking to me and getting me just like we used to do.  Thank you for being there for me and making an effort now... just like you used to do.

We'll get there, I surely hope and pray to God.  Oh, what I wouldn't give for us to journey together to that point we're we're both okay, not faking or hiding anything.

I miss you.

Tell me how you really feel

Very opinionated lately.  I have a lot of opinions, and I'm not afraid of what anyone thinks of them.  Like my sarcastic sister says, "Oh really, Amanda, then tell us how you really feel."

All right then...

I should have known by the way you passed me by
There was something in your eyes and it wasn't right
I should have walked but I never had the chance
Everything got out of hand and I let it slide

Now I only have myself to blame for falling for your stupid games
I wish my life could be the way it was before I saw your face

You stole my happy, you made me cry
Took the lonely and took me for a ride
And I wanna uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-undo it
You had my heart, now I want it back
I'm starting to see everything you lack
Boy, you blew it, you put me through it
I wanna uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-undo it

Na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na

Now your photos don't have a picture frame
And I never say your name and I never will
And all your things, well I threw them in the trash
And I'm not even sad

Now you only have yourself to blame for playing all those stupid games
You're always gonna be the same and, oh no, you'll never change

You stole my happy, you made me cry
Took the lonely and took me for a ride
And I wanna uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-undo it
You had my heart, now I want it back
I'm starting to see everything you lack
Boy, you blew it, you put me through it
I wanna uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-undo it

Na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na

You want my future, you can't have it
I'm still trying to erase you from my past
I need you gone so fast

You stole my happy, you made me cry
Took the lonely and took me for a ride
Boy, you blew it, you put me through it
I wanna uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-undo it

I have new rings on my fingers now.  In fact I bought one of them myself, because surprising to my own self, I'm doing just fine without him.  I get amazing compliments on my new diamonds, and it makes me feel like I won, even though I know in my heart it's not me vs. him, winning or losing.  I have a future though, and although I wasted 3 months holding onto the past for dear life, I'm done.  How stupid.  Stupid boys turn smart girls into stupid girls.  I wish no one any harm, there is no hate, not at all, but there is a lot of angry for how things went down and were never really wrapped up the right way.  I'll toss the bitterness, but the scars will always show.

But you know what?  I've slept just fine these recent nights.  I'm getting happier each passing day.  I am so content for the amazing things God has put into my life.  Job 1.21: The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.

I'm done.  The strings are gone.

Watch me fly.

That night

We are all human. We all mess up sometimes. Sometimes it's not so bad, but sometimes it's irreversibly tragic. We may have been doing well before said incident, or we might have already been struggling to stay afloat. Either way, every now and then, the rug gets pulled out from underneath us and we are forced to cope with whatever we have within an arm's reach at that moment, compensating once we figure out how to resume seemingly impossible things like getting out of bed in the morning, taking a shower, or even not taking pill after pill after pill out of a bottle you know at some point will give you rest.

This is my story.

Exactly 8 weeks ago. January 30th, 2010... I don't remember much from that night because it turned to black pretty quickly.

The last thing I did was reluctantly give him his keys back. I had hid them earlier because I felt something in the air.

Before he left, I held onto him so tightly, even dug my nails into his leg. I bit my lip hard, sure if I bit hard enough, I'd wake up from the horrendous moment I'd never in a million years be able to think of as reality.

I remember we were both crying - me in a fit of hysteria, him with soft tears running down his face. He looked like death but neatly used his tissue, while my face was dripping of tears and snot and I was crying loud enough for the neighbors to hear.

Hug, kiss, "I love you."

I unclenched my nails from his leg.

That was it.

Instant fade to black.

He was leaving - why? What did he say to me? Wait, Mom says I'm leaving, too? Where did Mom come from? Where are we going? It's late! I just want to sleep. I'm already in bed - let me stay here.

As if no time had passed at all, I now remember a man opening the passenger side door of a car and asking, "Does she need a wheelchair?" I think I say, "No," but Mom desperately tells him, "Yes." I am too weak to protest, too absent to care.

I remember seeing the check-in window of the local ER. I had been there before. Why now?

Black again.

People were talking about me, but I didn't understand. Vitals? What were they saying?

Black.

I remember I am in a bed, my mom beside me, people loudly arguing from behind the curtain next to me.

Did I know where I was? Did I ask where I was?

I hear someone say, "Well she doesn't have a choice." A female, I think. A doctor, maybe? Did I protest? Surely if someone was taking my choice away, I'd be protesting! Choice about what? What was going on?

Another gap in recall before a man and a woman are strapping me to a gurney. Are they putting me in an ambulance? How is the sun rising? It's night time. Where are we going? Wait, where? To the hospital with the psychiatric floor? But I'm a nurse - do they know that? I'm not crazy. Must have been a mix up. "Pink-slipped?" What in the world does that mean? Where is the pink paper? Is "pink slip" just a saying? Can I sign a paper to get out of this? They tell me that's not how it works.

Next, I am in the hallway on a gurney. Where is my mom? Where is he? Last night was a weird dream, and now what kind of dream is this?

The black begins to turn to grey.

Nurses are changing shifts. I ask to change rooms because something bothers me about my roommate. Was she loud, smelly or obnoxious? Or was I just being difficult? I don't remember.

New room. This is worse. This lady talks to things and stares out the window. She's tiny, yet she scares me. I cannot be in the same room as this woman. "That's all the beds we have," the nurse tells me. Could I have a private room? This was not the Hilton or the Inter-Continental. This was the psychiatric floor - this was jail for crazy people.

Where are my things? "We have to lock them up here," says the nurse. What? Why? I thought of elementary school and the shoeboxes we packed for the prisoners at Christmastime. We had to buy the pencils without erasers because the teacher said they could use the metal to make weapons. Apparently they were very careful about what people in jail could have. In this place, they say we are dangerous to ourselves, not each other. They aren't scared of us breaking out or hurting people, but they are protecting us from suicide. Do they know I'm not suicidal? Do they know I just want my things? Do they know I just want to go home?

The grey is now beginning to fade into an odd translucency, sort of hazed over.

"We saved your breakfast for you in the dayroom," the nurse tells me. What time is it? They took my cell phone away, so I don't know. I later found out that there was one television on the entire floor, and only two telephones - all in the dayroom.

What choice do I have but to venture out? I can't stay in this room forever, especially with this roommate.

The hallways are quiet, and noise is coming from the dayroom. They're smiling and laughing. These people are my age, and only a few seem older. Are they crazy? Am I crazy? When can I go home? It is Sunday, and my new friends tell me no one goes home on weekends. There are seminars tomorrow, and they say if we go to them, the doctors will let us go home. They have all been here before, and they know the floor routine pretty well.

I approach a corded telephone hanging on the wall and call home to ask Mom what happened and how I can leave. I try not to cry as the room is full of people who can hear me, who can see me. What do I even look like? I need clothes, makeup, something to take a shower with. I give Mom a list of things I need from home and ask her for his phone number. My mind is so foggy that I can't remember it on my own. 330, was it 730 next, or 714? What were the last 4 digits? Wait, that is my cousin's phone number. I think Mom says not to call him, although I do. Do I eventually remember the number on my own or does she give it to me?

I dial the numbers. He isn't answering, but I know he is there. The fury restarts the downpour of tears. I leave a voicemail. Crying, I tell him where I am and ask him to come visit me. I tell him when visiting hours are. 6-8pm, that's all. I tell him they took my phone, and I am all alone. I beg him to come. I know he will, because he always comes. He had been in the hospital with me for my wisdom teeth, my car wreck, and all of my procedures at the Cleveland Clinic. I knew he'd be here for me now.

I tell him I love him and hang up the phone.

I need to cry some more, or rather, I cannot stop crying. Back in my room, frustrated at the sun shining in, I draw the curtain once my roommate leaves the room. I lay in bed and sob as my roommate comes back in and opens the curtains. I'm not going to protest. But what is my roommate thinking? Surely she can hear me. Surely the whole floor can hear me.

The nurse is nice to me. I don't remember her name, but can she give me some medicine? Something to take the pain away? Yes, Ativan is what I took. They won't give me what I overdosed on? I'm a nurse. I'm me. I'm not a drug addict, and I did not overdose.

But apparently I did. Last night.

"Your doctor ordered Xanax instead. Would you like that?" I beg for what she offers. Anything to take this away, please, anything.

I fall asleep.

It is 6pm as my nurse wakes me to say my mom is here. Finally, my mom! "Visitors are only allowed in the dayroom," my nurse tells me. My own mother can't come see me in my hospital bed? This place is getting worse and worse.

I start down the hallway. One look at her familiar face and I break down. My dad is here, too. He has just gotten home from Chicago. I wonder what he is thinking.

"Where is he?" I ask my mom. Mom hesitates, trying to think of how to ease the truth with those words only moms know, the words that make bad things seem less bad... especially if you're five years old. Which, unfortunately, I am not.

"Honey, I don't think he's coming." Right. I tell her that he is coming, though, just as I remember what happened last night, last night in that dream.

Oh, but wait a minute. That's what happened?

He isn't coming.

Mom and I join Dad on a bench. I sit by Mom and sob into her shoulder like I do when she knows I'm at the bottom line, at the last frayed end of my rope, ready to collapse into a million tiny pieces. The way that makes her cry too, whisper "Jesus," and run her fingers through my hair.

My nurse is trying to help.

Nothing can help this, no, not this.

Mom and my nurse talk, leaving Dad and I on the bench. I don't want to talk to my dad. I am embarrassed about what happened, about my new life, about where I am, what I apparently did last night. I snap at him about something and don't say anything else.

It is 7pm now. My nurse's shift is over. She isn't in a hurry to leave.

I am so tired, and I take my medicine to sleep. Mom brought it from home since the pharmacy at the hospital doesn't carry it. I ask my nurse if my mom can come put me to bed. "I need her to tuck me in," I explain, "I need my mom." She agrees but says she will have to come along to supervise, and it can only be for five minutes.

Next I am in bed. My roommate is chanting something, yelling obscenities to no one, and I am scared. My nurse sees my face, disappears between the curtain, and somehow calms her down.

Mom is arranging my few "allowed" things around me, everything else locked in the cabinet. She lays my Bible beside me and pulls my blanket up as I cry. She can't leave. I can't stay in this awful place alone. Mom prays with me, and then my nurse appears to realize something, and as if this is her cue, she says she will be right back.

She is here with some photocopied papers - poems, articles, encouragement. My nurse is a Christian, too. I feel safe with her, and she tells me she will be praying for me. We talk about God. I can tell my mom feels relieved.

I think we are far past five minutes, and my nurse has to go home. I ask if I'll see her the next day, and she tells me she is going on vacation. I am falling asleep, but I still cry harder when both she and my mom have to leave. Mom tells me to make sure I go to the sessions the next day. "Do well, honey, so you can come home." I make her promise to come at visiting hours. Weekdays only have one visiting time per day, while weekends have two. "Keep your phone on, Mom," I plead, "As soon as they'll let me go home, I have to get out of here."

Fade to black, and now morning.

A man is in my room checking the hospital bands on my wrist. Where is my nurse? She had to go home last night. It is tomorrow. This is my new nurse. He explains that the doctors want labs as he draws blood from my left arm. Ah, nice flash. (Yes, I approved of his phlebotomy.) I wonder why in the world they want labs. I don't care. Back to sleep.

Breakfast.

The sessions begin at 8am, and everyone is excited for their chance to talk to the doctor - it's the only chance all day of getting released. One wrong move, and you have to spend another night in lockdown.

When can I see the doctor? No one knows. They call your name when your doctor comes. Mom had called my psychiatrist to tell her I was admitted to the psychiatric floor. Surely she wouldn't be able to believe it. I was probably one of her easiest patients, and now this? I knew she'd yell at me for taking too many pills. At each visit, she would always ask about different things and never forgot to ask, "And how are you and your fiance doing?" Each time, I'd gush over how wonderful he was and how much joy he brought into my life. How could I tell her what happened? This didn't even make sense to us, so how would it make sense to her, to strangers?

We have a student nurse from Walsh University on our unit today. I find this weird, almost embarrassing. She goes to the sessions with us, and I tell her I am a student nurse, too. Finally, someone normal. Wait, am I normal? I'm here, so maybe not.

In the sessions, we learn about positive thinking and coping skills. Nothing I haven't heard before. A new social worker or psychologist or counselor leads each one, and in one session, we make a craft where we tie ribbons around a donut shaped piece of cardboard. We are supposed to write our hopes and dreams on each ribbon. The craft supplies aren't much to talk about, so I find some sort-of pretty flowers and glue them onto my circle. I fill it with other things, but no ribbons. I don't have any hopes and dreams anymore. My entire life is gone, and it will surely take the rest of my life for me to figure out what to do without him.

The rest is a blur of filling out lunch menus, sleeping off more Xanax, and crying in bed. At the start of a new session, I finally hear my name. The doctor is here to see me!

I have no idea who this doctor is, but I answer his questions. Yes, I'm fine. No, I don't want to hurt myself. Can I please go home? I look at the diamond on my finger and beg to go home. Yes, I have an appointment to see my psychiatrist in a few weeks. Yes, I feel safe at home. Yes, I have support - my family and so many friends. I try to seem as normal as possible, as sane as can be. I cannot mess this up and spend another day in this place.

Finally he tells me, "Then great, we will write up the papers and you can go home. It will probably be about 3:00. Do you have someone to come pick you up?" I tell him my mom will definitely come, and I run to call her.

Finally, I am leaving this place! Once while working as a student nurse technician at another hospital, I had to float to the psych floor, and it was the absolute scariest four hours of my life. These two days have been just as bad, and I'm almost dreading my psychiatric rotation even more now (next Fall). Words cannot express how good it is to be leaving or my desperation to never end up here again.

Mom came and drove me home. With no idea what I was going to do for the rest of my life without him, I had a meltdown that lasted a good month or two. It's been awhile since that night that started it all, and I think I'm doing better. Just a little bit, but at least it's something. Sometimes things overwhelm me, and I have a bad day, or cry myself to sleep, or remember him and break down, or I'll think something mean and then get mad at myself, but God has been so good. My mom prays with me when I can't sleep, my friends make sure I'm always doing all right, school and my kiddos keep me super busy, and there have even been a few (very) random people who have called to say God put it on their hearts to pray for me. Throughout it all, I've seen God work in some absolutely amazing ways.

I never thought I'd be able to say it, but lately, more days are better than worse. Two months ago, I didn't see how I could live beyond a few certain bottles of pills. Several weeks ago, I was living one-step-forward, twenty-steps-back, and now? Well things are starting to get different now. I've dealt with loss, anger, bitterness, blame, hindsight, realizations, fear, sadness, grief, jealously, hate, and so many terrible things over the past endless weeks, but I think I'm nearing the other side now. Or at least I'm trying. Getting there. Sure, the days hurt (a lot sometimes!), but these days, they hurt differently. I finally see a little glimmer of hope and can feel significant growth.  I have reflected enough to know this is where God has brought me. It's by his grace and mercy alone that he has given me another chance on making the biggest decision of my life. He saved me and someone else from what many people thought was best for two people, only to find out those two people could have been so miserable 5, 10, 20, 30 years from now. That's pretty unbelievable to me still, but trusting is more important than understanding. We obey before we know why. Just like a toddler approaching the stove has to obey Mama's "NO!", we can get into trouble sometimes until our Father draws the line. Sure there is screaming and crying (and trips to the psych ward!), but we always grow up and look at things later, thinking, "Wow, can you believe what almost happened? Can you believe how our God had mercy on us, saved us from ourselves, and even helped us deal with it when there was no hope in sight?"

Life can be treacherous, but through God's grace, mercy, and love, we endure. Journeying one day at a time on a path full of not just trials, but surprises, treasures, and victories.

I'm hurting, yes, and the empty space inside me doesn't seem to be going away, but still, I journey on with a truly grateful heart. No matter how I feel, I know God has a higher plan, and he continuously gives me enough grace and strength to keep going.

Today: Bad to Worse to Worst to Blessed

Today I woke up exhausted, not liking the gloom out my window, not looking forward to eliminating my Ex's existence on my legal documents, and not looking forward to visiting my hepatologist - an hour away - late in the afternoon.

So first up... in to see my attorney to get all of my power of attorneys, durable healthcare power of attorneys, living will, etc. revised.  Mr. Attorney said it wasn't smart to put my fiance in such important legal documents, but I told him we weren't like other couples, and it would be fine.  Today I bit my words as we took his names off of all of my legal documents - as if he doesn't exist - on my most important papers anymore.  I signed, signed, and signed, and he notarized, notarized, notarized.  Off we went with new documents, reflecting my new life.  Off we went to Cleveland... ugh.

My mom and I listened to a really uplifting CD on the way there, and I love spending time with my mom.  But the drive is so long.  The visits aren't the worst of it; it's just draining by the time you do the driving, parking, waiting, signing in, etc. But onto to the visit - Of course I saw Dr. Hupertz's resident first, and this resident rubbed me the wrong way.  That's what started it.  Then I saw my doctor.  All in all = lots of tests and procedures to be scheduled.  My I'm-fine-hey-no-liver-problems-here break is officially over.  It seems I get a hiatus every Aug/September through April or May since she tries to follow the school schedule, but it's approaching March... April... May... June, and there's lots of info she wants on me... well, here it comes again.  How's the scans looking? How are the cysts on my kidneys looking?  How big are the varices?  Is the bloodflow blocked even more?  Is the MELD high enough to warrant a transplant yet?  She has questions, and I don't want to give her the time to get the answers.  I don't want the answers in all actuality.  I'm bored with all of this.  I just want to be better.  So anyways, back to today -  then we go to schedule all these procedures.  I always see the same scheduler who I love, but hey look, they decided to hire a new one who knows absolutely nothing.  I absolutely loathe arguing, and that's all we were doing, so I had to have my mom come in and talk to this woman because things were seriously getting that heated.  She couldn't care one bit about any word I had to say, and it was her way or no way, and she was all WRONG.  So we finally got me scheduled, I went downstairs and gave them their vials of blood, and then my mom and I went to the car in the rain, and I slept the entire way home.

I get home, go to bed, exhausted and hoping I can sleep.  Of course not.  So I take some meds.  Then I'm not sure if it was he or I, but texting with the Ex began.  Things got violent and some very hurtful things were said, some opportunities to simply show love were ignored, and I ended up on my dad's bed crying while he watched TV.  I asked him if this was a normal way for a guy to handle something like this.  That's how the conversation began.  He turned off the TV and we talked and talked and talked, onto and past about 200 different topics, each about said guy and his actions and what has happened and where it hurts.  Then Dad stands up... what is he doing? Getting something out of the bathroom... oh... a tissue.  For me.  Dad got me a tissue.  So by the time said tissue is in my hand, I was bawling, so he just stood there, arms open wide, until I came into them and sobbed.  He told me he was hurting so badly for me and he knows how I've been wronged, how the approach to this breakup was entirely poorly-mannered and months of damage had already occurred.... long story. But he told me how this has been so hard for him to see me go through this, and he loved me, and there was a greater plan.  So I sobbed, and he cried, and I sobbed... into my daddy's strong arms.  His arms meant he knew, he cared, he understood, and everything would be okay.  Hurt and violated, yes, but he agreed with me in my gratitude for the grace of God intervening 3 weeks ago.  It's amazing, it is.

Then I texted my sister to see a movie at 10 with me.  I ached to see Dear John again... to see someone else hurting like me.  But, Nik has to go to bed for early class.  I text my cousin.  I text my bestie.  I remember that Jen, bless her heart, had just gotten out of work, and here she tells me me she'll be on her way just as soon as she stops home for clothes.  She's almost missing a work deadline on her new RN job and is exhausted out of her mind, but she's driving an hour from work to her house to get stuff to come 45 minutes to my house to spend the night and pray with me and let me cry and cry and cry.... and then wake up and make sure I'm just a little better in the morning.  Now that's a best friend.

We are blessed, dear friends, so so blessed.

Anything but this

Sometimes you have to be apart from people you love, but that doesn’t mean that you love them any less.  Sometimes it makes you love them even more.
          The Last Song movie

It’s hard when you miss people, but you know, if you miss them, it means you’re lucky.  It means you had something special in your life, someone worth missing.
          One Tree Hill 7.16

My hair stylist lost her husband to cancer last August.  It was a hard battle with a drawn out ending.  She hasn’t been the same since and probably won’t be.  Last week, I went in to get my hair done, and she stopped and looked at me, knowing what had happened since my mom had seen her the week before.  “It’s like this huge empty feeling right here, isn’t it?” as she stopped and pointed to somewhere between her stomach and her heart.  I nodded, holding back tears.  I didn’t have the courage to ask how long until that feeling fades away... if ever?

I watched you sleeping quietly in my bed
You don't know this now but there's some things that need to be said
And it's all that I can hear, It's more than I can bare...

What if I fall and hurt myself?
Would you know how to fix me
What if I went and lost myself?
Would you know where to find me
If I forgot who I am,
     Would you please remind me?
Cause without you things go hazy
          Rosi Golan

2 weeks ago to this moment, January 30, 2010, my fiance (of 2.5+ years, boyfriend of nearly 5.5) and I broke the relationship.

We bowed to what we knew was the plan of God, even though it was the hardest thing either of us have ever had to do.

I cried to God, "Anything but this," and I meant it.  I've known sickness, I've known pain, I've known more than most.  And my continual cry was honest, yet my prayer unanswered.

As for God, His way is perfect.
          Psalm 18.30

That late Saturday night, I ended up in the emergency room with a subsequent hospital stay after a complete breakdown, and the rest of the days haven’t been any easier.  One day I slept for about 20 hours straight (starting at 4pm), while other nights, I can’t even sleep.  God never said His way was easy, but He did promise He’d be with us every step of the way.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me.
          Psalm 23.4-5

However, Jonathan and I have both used this separation time to bring us closer to God.
Sometimes all but our very lives need to be taken away from us before we realize
God is all we have left... and God is all we really need.

     In the beginning, GOD.
          Genesis 1.1a

Him that filleth all in all
          Ephesians 1.23b

We’ve been holding to the promises we know are true, trying to get through this, to the other side... whatever is over there, we don’t know.

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.
          Proverbs 3.5-6

Yet still I can’t help but wonder...

How long until the tan line on my left index finger goes away?
How long until I can start eating and drinking? (Losing 16 lbs in 2 weeks just isn't right)
How long until I can see you without having to hold back tears?
How long until I can mention your name without crumbling?
How long until I can wash my hands without going into a panic, sure my ring is gone?
How long until I can wear the clothes I wore when I was with you?
How long until I can go into any place we have ever been together?
How long until I can watch the movies or shows I first saw with you?
How long until I can truly smile or laugh or love again?
How long until all of the beautiful memories fade?
How long until this nightmare is over?
How long until we finally see His higher plan?

5 1/2 years of memories

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
          Isaiah 55.8-9

Right after that night, I made two lists - one of things I will miss, and one of things I won’t miss.  I realize the second might have been inappropriate, but it’s the only way I could formulate some kind of coping at that point in time.

These are the things which I ultimately ache to see, hear, or feel just one more time... I'd give all but my very soul to have these things just for one more second.   The things about you that I miss... The things you did that I’ll be forever so grateful for.  Reasons to miss you even more...  The things I will never forget.  Whatever you want to call it, this is my list.

Your subconscious humming
Your immaculate DVR commercial-skipping skills
Putting up with my rants
Entertaining my theories
Your cold hands in the winter
Letting me control the music in the car
How you'd gently fix my ring if it was poking your finger
Not minding my "return policy"
How you'd gently stroke my back
Your nerdiness
How you could tell - without even looking - if I fell asleep
Each time you told me I looked cute or was beautiful
How you'd reassure me, "It's okay - we'll prepare for the worst."
When you'd hold me as I sobbed
How you'd whisper to God when I couldn't find the strength
You using a coaster and usually putting any stray dishes in the dishwasher
Long emails in the beginning
No request was ever too much for you, not even Dairy Queen in January
Getting gas before you picked me up
Input regarding wedding things (colors, stationery, photographers)
Relentless love
Learning the value of family
Putting up with my eccentricities and moods
Carefully learning my needs
Noticing I buy my favorite clothing items in a few different colors
Letting me take my time
Reassuring me
Pretending to like your Amanda plant when really, you let it die
Helping me cope with transitions and life events
Untangling my jewelry
For painting my walls and hanging my curtains
For waiting for me
For knowing when and how to deal with what was beyond my walls
Long drives
Stopping me before I went "too far" whether it was in speech or deed
Dropping your plans to hold me while I cried
Driving me home, going east on 18, stars out, soft music playing, our hands together, our words soft
Miniscule errands, all the time
Your passion for your work
Keeping my secrets
Talking about our future children
Why you almost passed out
Chick flicks
Sacrificing to buy the bigger, clearer diamond to surprise me with
Driving 2.5 hours to a concert you probably didn't want to go to
Teaching me basketball
Holding my hand in the hospital
Letting me dawdle when shopping for anything, anywhere
Movie theaters, Playhouse Square, concerts, Disney on Ice, Cavs games, and t-ball games
Letting me do everything elaborately and excessively
Growing your caring nature
Going home only once I was settled in bed and kissed goodnight
Letting me call you at midnight
Spontaneous "I'll love you" texts
Respecting me
Your chivalry
Your light, just-because kisses on my head
Sharing each and every one of our 1,190 days

Friday, August 20, 2004 to Saturday, January 30, 2010... Right now, I’m still coming to grips with losing my very best friend, fiance, husband, children, pretty house in Hudson, Ikea furniture, my job in Cleveland, and all of the other things we’ve weaved into the dream of our beautiful future.

We fit together like we were meant to be, and I really thought we were.  The grief is worse than losing anyone in death because you’re still alive, I’m still alive, and both of us have to figure out now how to live apart until we can live together again as friends.

You were my first love.  You carried and took care of me, stayed by me, held onto me.  You taught me the existence of love itself, in believing in things much greater than ourselves. You nurtured my growth, enabled my being. You gently tore down my unsurpassable, incorruptible walls. You taught me how to love.

No matter where we each end up, we will always be entwined into the innermost beings of each other. Growing together for a quarter of our lives has left undeniable, indelible marks on our souls. For that, I will always love you.

Hear my cry, oh God - attend unto my prayer.  From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee.  When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I, for thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy... I will trust covert of thy wings.  Selah.
          Psalm 61.1-4
