Beyond letting go

God is really trying to tell me something lately.

"The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord."
Job 1.21

A few weeks ago, one of my dearest friends hurt me deeply by an inappropriate judgment call.  She somehow developed a prejudice against me because of my health issues, and after drawing inaccurate conclusions, she made a hasty decision that ended up hurting both of us.  I don't know what will happen with our relationship, but we haven't talked since that day.  I don't know if we ever will again.

A scene in Grey's Anatomy last night reminded me of my life lately.

Teddy told Henry, the man she signed marriage paperwork with, solely to provide him with health insurance, "Life and death decisions, it wasn't part of our deal."

Henry replied with, "I'm 42 years old. I lost my mom and dad four and five years ago, respectively.  My sister lives in Prague. which is a longer story than you want to hear.  When I talk to her I tend to err on the side of, 'How are the kids, and everything here is great,' because she's broke and because my health thing is, it's exhausting.

"I used to have a best friend, but he married a woman who made sure I knew that my health was exhasting.  And because I kept maxing out my insurance policies, I had to switch jobs about 9 times in the past 5 years, so I've always just been the new guy in the cubicle by the bathroom who takes a lot of sick days.  It's not a guy people make friends with."

That scene reminded me of how my health situation has been exhausting - not only for myself, but for everyone around me.  It hasn't been for the flighty or faint of heart.  And because of my unpredictable health, I've been in college for 6 years now.  As soon as I get used to a group of classmates, I have to take a semester off for one reason or another.  I've been with maybe 3 or 4 different tracks of students, and it's hard.  Very hard.  Then I lost my fiancé in January and just had my best friend reject me because of my health.  That's painful.

You know, I've been asked why I am so honest, transparent, and often painfully candid on my blog.  My answer is this: I do not want to be an open book.  I'm actually a private person.  But I've been doing this a few years, and while I enjoy writing and connecting, that's not the point of it all.  The reason I do this is the idea that, if my story - challenges and overcomings, fears and dreams - can in any way make the road easier for one person, or even just make them feel less alone on the way, then I'm gladly and humbly obliged.

My journey recovering from losing my fiancé last January 30 is probably what I get questioned about the most.  It's been messy, and in a perfect world, I would have handled it better. If you remember, I almost lost my life because of it, and I did completely destroy several months of my life all on my own. I'm not proud of how things have transpired, and I definitely wish I could have coped better, but I'm not going to hide one day of this past almost-year. In many comments and emails, I've learned that my journey has not been rare, odd, or abnormal. There's so many other people going through similar losses and handling it in similar ways. We are going through this together, and I appreciate that. I truly believe we learn and grow from each other.

So with that said, my cousin sent me an email this morning that hit my heart hard. She has dealt with a lot of things I cannot imagine dealing with.  She lost hope in relationships, almost in life, and is now engaged to one of sweetest men I've ever met. She's in so much joy and bliss, and as close as we are, words cannot express how happy I am for her.  It all transpired so quickly and unexpectedly - so wonderfully - when things were really at their worst. I have no doubt that their relationship is a miracle of God, hope He sent to save them.

In her email, she reminded me of this: "It takes the jerks in our lives and the heartache and misery to really appreciate the real love that has, or will, come into our lives."

While in my recent situations, I've found that truth easy to forget, I know it to be true in all cases. Take my transplant for example. I never really took life for granted, but now that I've been through hell just to take the breaths I take today, I'm so much more grateful for and appreciative of the gift of life and the preciousness of each moment I've been given.

My cousin also quoted her aunt who told her years ago, "The best revenge is to be happy." When we are upset and hurt, we give the power to those people or situations who have upset us or broken our hearts.

In the past months, my mom has told me many times that I'm only letting the other side win when I let them upset me.  It's my loss, not theirs.  Being sad and miserable does nothing to get back at those who hurt us, and it does nothing to advance our situation.  Instead, it only wrecks our own lives.

I guess that's one of the reasons I've fought so hard to bounce back from my surgery, why I pushed myself to go back to school this past week, 8 months early. It's why I have new friends and am so into trying new things, forgetting about my fears and practicing diving into life head-first.

Additionally, as my sweet friend Jenn reminded me in an email last week, "Sometimes we can allow situations and even people to keep us from experiencing the fullness that God has planned for our lives... We do need to let go and let God have it - all of it - if we really want to see Him in His fullest."

Gulp.

Yet so true.

This morning, I read a post at (in)courage, one of my favorite blogs. The writers are a large group of Christian women, and they take turns posting inspirational stories.
Today Brooke Keith posted "Learning to Let Go." She told of times when she had to take things away from her tiny baby, Jack. She took things away from him, such as dirty pieces of food, smalls object (choke risk), and a screwdriver that had fallen onto the floor, all out of love and protection.

Each time, Brooke was surprised at his sturdy grip, and she noted the crocodile tears that would fall from his deep, blue eyes. Then she realized "Jack hasn’t fallen far from the tree. I think of things that I too work so hard to reach. Things I feel obligated to. Things I really like, things that make me feel safe, comfortable, and successful. I watch as God pulls them from my hands. I sit in tears and cry 'MINE!'

"He doesn’t understand does He? I need this! I want this! It belongs to me!

"But God gently wrestles with me ... 'Let go.'

"Though we’ve been here before ... I seem to forget with each new circumstance that God knows what He’s doing. That it all always works out. That He closes windows to open doors no man can shut.

"I can’t always see what things are good for me even when they feel good inside my hands and even better inside my life. He knows when I’ve picked up a good Cheerio ... and He also knows when I’ve picked up a Fruit Loop that the chihuahua pulled from the neighbor’s trash bin. He sees the dangers of sharp emotions and situations that could cut me deep.

"I reach for the thing I want...

"But it’s no good.

"God slides across the kitchen, socks sliding quickly against the freshly swept floor. He lifts me swiftly. The no-good thing falling to the wayside. I protest ... But He does it because He loves me.

"My grasp loosens in anticipation for God’s something better lined up in the cupboard.

"God beckons softly 'Let go.'"

My sweet friends, God does have something even "better lined up in the cupboard." May we learn to let go. God can't give us what we need if our hands are full of what we shouldn't have or what we're simply holding onto because we don't know what else to do.  Or perhaps we do know what else to do, but we're just afraid.  What a hard place to be.

May we obtain true joy in our Lord. May He give us renewed senses of purpose and bless us with happiness anew. While being happy may be the best revenge, may we forsake revenge in the truest sense of the word. May we be humble and grateful to our God for taking away something that was either dangerous to us or in the way of something better.  Let us lay down what is clouding our vision, the high mound of people and situations that interferes with our view.  Beyond it - can't you see? - is God in his fullest.

Again, those comforting words,

"The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord."

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned. Never take a moment for granted.  Not one single moment, not one gesture, not one breath.  You never know when you'll lose your ability to climb into your own bed, breathe without pain, or fall asleep alone.  You never know when someone will turn, a situation will change, or your life will be taken away.
39. Quote a song line that defines your year. Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars?  I could really use a wish right now, wish right now, wish right now
A prayer for the New Year
Dear Lord, we thank you for this past year.  We thank you for bringing us through the trials and gracing our days with blessings.  Your grace was evident in every situation, your hand on every moment.  Guide us in this new year.  Let us love you more each day and remember to put our trust in you.  Give us courage, peace, and humility.  We love you.  Amen.
Psalm 107.1: Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good.  His love endures forever.

Standing there alone

We all want to grow up. We're desperate to grow up, to grab all the opportunities we can, to live.  We're so busy trying to get out of that nest that we don't think about the fact that it's going to be cold out there, really freaking cold.  Because growing up sometimes means leaving people behind.  And by the time we stand on our own two feet, we're standing there alone.

Monday Fun

No jokes or pictures, kind of busy... in fact I haven't even watched my DVR'ed Grey's from last week yet!  But for your viewing enjoyment on this gloomy Monday...

This is for all you children of the 80s, and maybe, just maybe, the 90s... and especially for my sister who is smashed right between, being born in 1989.  She'll know all these songs though, she's musically well rounded, lol.  Good memories of simpler times...  :) J-T on Fallon...

Speaking of ages... I love the Beloit College Mindset List.  Beginning in 2002, they've released it each year for the graduating college class.  Compare the Class of 2009 (going by when I started college, this would be my "age group") with the little ones just venturing off into college right now, the Class of 2014.  Isn't it crazy?

Making time for pedis with my bestie today!  Yay!  :)

Nobody wants to remember

They take pictures of mountain climbers at the top of the mountain -
      They're smiling,
              ecstatic,
                    triumphant.

They don't take pictures along the way because
who wants to remember the rest of it?

We push ourselves because we have to,
           not because we like it.

       The relentless climb?
The pain and anguish of taking it to the next level?
   Nobody takes pictures of that,
        nobody wants to remember.
We just want to remember the view from the top,
the breathtaking moment at the edge of the world.

That's what keeps us climbing,
and its worth the pain.
That's the crazy part.

      It's worth anything.

Grey's Anatomy... A few more days!!

Grey's Anatomy... I'm counting down the days!!  Apparently, it's going to be a "heavy" season, as E! lets us know.

01

Do you remember the finale from last year?  It was so ... so.... just wow.

Every now and then, look around.  Drink it in.  'Cause this is it.  It might all be gone tomorrow.

Here is a sneak peek of what's coming - the first 5 minutes of episode 6.1.  Thursday night!!

And how about Private Practice?  That season finale was a little too intense, and it will be interesting to see how things go from there.  I think they should move Addison back to Grey's and can Private Practice, but until then... I cannot help but watch.

I got my Season 5 Grey's DVDs in the mail yesterday from Amazon.  I have my first huge exam of the semester on Tuesday so maybe I should leave them in the shrinkwrap.  Or not...  :)

May 21, 2009

Because it’s Thursday

In honor of what should be on TV every Thursday night of the entire year....

This video is beautiful.  Watch.  :)

May 20, 2009

Did you say it?

Did you say it?

I love you.
I don't ever want to live without you.
You changed my life.

Did you say it?

Make a plan.
Set a goal.
Work toward it.

But every now and then,
Look around.
Drink it in...

'Cause this is it.

It might all be gone tomorrow.

Seriously, Shonda Rhimes? Seriously?

[Grey's Spoiler alert if you DVR'ed!]

Dear Shonda Rhimes...

As the creator, producer, and sometimes-writer of Grey's Anatomy... I used to hold utmost respect for you.  Used to.

Until last night.

I had no qualms with you ever before, but in regards to last night?

You seriously expect to leave us like that for FOUR months?! Seriously?

You think your 30+ million American viewers alone would be okay with an ending like that?  I hope you are feeling a little outnumbered right about now.

Going into your big double-episode season finale event, we all knew there would be cliffhangers like would Izzie let Derek operate on her brain again?  Would Owen and Cristina be okay, or would our battlescarred soldier get the boot?  Would Meredith and Derek ever tie the knot?  What's really up with Sloan and Little Grey?  Bailey and the fellowship?

Now those questions were fair game.

But the questions you managed to conjure in the first 2 hours and 54 minutes?  Who said you could do that?  Who said you could take us for about a billion twists and turns and then tie our dizzy eyes in knots and then jab pens into them for the last 6 minutes of the show?!  Those 360 seconds about sent me into a code myself!

Seriously, Shonda Rhimes, don't you love your adoring fans?

But alas, I should have known you wouldn't take the easy way out on any of this.  George?  Of course you couldn't let him just go join the army.  You had to send him to the edge of death.  You had to let him be George and save a life.  Izzie?  You couldn't let her choose the surgery, taunt us with the possibility of her losing her memory, let us see her struggling, bring her back, and then BAM, take her to meet Geroge?! In the prom dress of all things?! And way to play us - anyone who doesn't live in a pop-news-bubble knows that the past year has been filled with rumors of Katherine Heigl and TR Knight being dissatisfied with their Grey's contracts, wanting to leave... whatever.  But you want us to wait FOUR months to see which one we lose, or rather, whether or not we lose both of them?

I knew you were crossing your boundaries when you brought Denny back for a "bonus" episode.  And sure, I guess I underestimated you until Mom and Jonathan figured out that George was John Doe long before I even had a clue.  I underestimated you when my heart was finally at peace for Izzie... the love of her and Alex.  Beautiful.  I really did savor it, Shonda... until I saw her hand drop - I winced and then yep, I knew it - she began to code.  And I'm not even going to tell you how upset I am that you let a room full of doctors work to resuscitate Izzie while her chart, clearly labeled "DNR" laid right in front of them.  Now Alex, I could see him crossing the line.  But a room full of doctors?  Don't get me wrong, I want Isobel Stevens alive.  But the medical purist I am couldn't believe you even had the Chief himself say, "Screw the DNR." Each one of those doctors would have at that point lost their license... must be nice to be on TV, right?

And then throw in the Bailey drama?  Whether or not she'd take up the peds joint couldn't be enough for you, oh Shonda.  You had to send her into a breakdown and make us realize that although hidden just as quickly as previously brought up,  Miranda Bailey's marriage is at stake.

Shonda Rhimes, I loathe you right now.  I will loathe you until September, and then somehow I'm pretty sure I won't be able to help but to fall in love with you all over again.

Thank you for picking up a season that was off to a rocky start.  Think about getting back to the greatness that was Season 2.  Season 6 will be it, let it be it, please.

That's all.

Grey’s Anatomy ~ Season 5 Finale

So it's COMING!  2 days until the Grey's Antomy Season 5 Finale... probably one of the most anticipated finales in its history.

And here are a few spoiler-slanted observations, if you will.

First of all, "Izzie" (ABC, really) created Meredith & Derek's wedding website on theknot.com, and funny enough, the date now says May 14, 2009 when last week, it said May 7.  They're tricky, aren't they.  Does that mean there will be a wedding on Thursday?

On another front, Michael Ausiello over at Entertainment Weekly has said this on May 1:

Okay, now he's really dead.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan confirms that he'll reprise his role as Denny on Grey's Anatomy before the end of the season. But then that's it. Really.
"I can confirm that I will be coming back one more time," he revealed to us at last night's Hollywood premiere of Star Trek. "I think it will be done after that. I think I have been on the Grey's Anatomy set for the last time."

One more time?  Last week's May 7 episode uses up that pass.  So according to Jeffrey Dean Morgan, we will not be seeing Denny anymore.  Does that mean that Izzie lives?  If she died, there's no doubt in my mind that Denny would come to get her or it would show her reuniting with the one she loved so much.  But now, she's Mrs. Isobel Karev.  Does that somehow make her "over" Denny?  We know he at least won't be there to haunt her in those hallucinations, but maybe if she died, Denny wouldn't be there simply because she doesn't love him anymore.  So does that mean Izzie dies?  Does that mean Derek ultimately agrees to perform the second surgery on her?  If he didn't, or if it wasn't successful, she would definitely see Denny again.

It's anybody's call...

Today, Chyler Leigh spoke out just four days after having her new baby girl.  You can check out the full interview on E! Online, but when asked, "Is there anything you can tease about the season-five finale of Grey's Anatomy?" she replied with this:

And as far as the finale goes, the most that I can say is that there are a lot of unexpected twists and turns that happen in this episode. It is very very powerful episode and nobody is gonna want to miss it. There is a lot of key plotlines and a lot of answered questions and then more questions raised.

So this Thursday, I'm hoping for a wedding and a miracle.  (And hoping Grey's doesn't end up taking a summer hiatus after all!  Yeah right...)

For now, that's pretty much all we know.  And here's a Tweet from Shonda Rimes on May 8:

MerDer fans: remember when I told you that you would be happy at the end of the season? I meant it. Seriously. You just gotta hold on...

Like we have a choice!

2 more days!!!

In the meantime, go savor Shonda's blog post on the 100th episode of Grey's, "What A Difference A Day Makes."

Okay.  So…100.
100 episodes.
Which means I was so tired last night that I forgot to blog.  But I’m blogging now.  I’m here now.
First, a warning:  this is our last blog of the season.  It’s also our last podcast and today will be my last tweets of the season.
We’re going dark, people.
Why?  Because next week’s episodes (two in one night) are so explosive and cliff-hanger-y that we, the writers, have all agreed that we can’t even talk about them.  For fear of giving anything away.  We honestly can’t say a word.  But know that we are proud.  Of the episodes.  And of you.  For sticking with us.  For 100 plus episodes.  For going through the good and the bad.  For having faith in us.  And our characters.  We thank you and we appreciate it.  There are not words to express how much we appreciate it.
So this is the last you will hear from us until next season.
What can I say about the 100th?  Well, there was a wedding.  Which made some of you cry and made some you mad.  There was Denny.  Which made some of you cry and some of you mad.  But mostly, there was a point.
I had a point!
That happy woman you saw?  Doing her solo surgery and smiling at the Chief?  The one giving her wedding away with warmth and joy?  THAT WAS THE SAME WOMAN WHO TRIED TO DROWN HERSELF.  That was our dark and twisty girl.  All grown up.  Whole.  Healed.  FOR REAL.  It was a day I never thought we’d see (well, I did think it but…hell, you know what I mean).  For once, Mer is the calm one. The happy one.  The one who is fine.  For once, Mer is whole and healed and happy.  She doesn’t have a problem other than the Chief peeking over her shoulder during her solo surgery.  She is excited about her marriage.  She is calm.  She doesn’t need her eyebrows shaved off to be numbed into the submission of marriage.  She is fine.
That is shocking, I think.  So I’m going to say it again.  SHE.  IS. FINE.
That was my point.  After 100 episodes, Meredith Grey is grown up.  She is the thing her mother wished for her.  She is extraordinary.  Because, to get past the crap of your past?  To move on?  To let the past go and change?  That is extraordinary.  To love?  Without fear?  Without screwing it up?  That is extraordinary.  It makes me happy to see her happy.
Now, Izzie’s got some problems.  Her tumor is back.  And she is scared to death.  But the thing is, Alex has grown up too.  Look at him.  Standing at the altar and saying those vows like a man.  He’s grown up.  And the two of them are married.  Which is unbearably sad because you know and I know the wedding wouldn’t be happening if it wasn’t clear that Izzie is maybe going to die.  But he’s become a man who can step up.  And I love him for it.
I went up to the editing room when the show was being editing and I saw my first images of Izzie lying in the hospital bed bald.  And I started to cry.  And I said to Susan Vaill, our brilliant editor, I said, “Ummm…I think Izzie is really sick.”  And she hollered at me “YOU MADE HER SICK!!!!”
But here’s the thing.  Until I saw my Izzie, bald and pale and wheezing in that bed…I mean, she’s sick. She’s really sick.  And I didn’t see it coming.  My brain got ahead of my heart on this one.  It hurt my heart to see her so sick.  The magnitude of one of our own, that sick, it was shocking to see off the page and on the screen.  She’s sick.  She’s really sick.  And now I’m a little scared.
In this episode, Denny comes back.  Not as her boyfriend.  Not as the guy she hallucinates having sex with.  No.  Denny comes back as death.  Death with a capital “D”.  Did you notice the black clothes?  The way he speaks sparingly?  He’s death.  He’s death standing over her.  I kept chanting the Emily Dickinson poem --- “because I could not stop for death, he kindly stopped for me”.  That’s Denny.  I gotta admit, I’m crossing my fingers that he goes away.  Because, as much as I love Denny (and y’all know how I love him), I want him to get out of there.  Like Bailey says “YOU TELL DENNY TO GO HOME.”  Because I don’t want Death to get Izzie.
Did you see George follow Owen’s advice and  go where he was needed?  Right to Izzie’s side to help her down the aisle?  He wasn’t the hero.  He was on the team.  He went where he was needed.  And Lexie?  Saying “you’re breathing?”  One of my favorite moments ever.
And Callie?  Oh my god, do I love Callie.  And I love her with Arizona, a whole healed person in her own right.  There was something so painfully poignant about Callie admitting that she is broke.  That the relationship is no longer on equal footing.  That she feels like she is in over her head because her father disowned her and cleaned out her bank account.  I love that Arizona says “I like the girl who has the sandwiches.”  I like that they make me feel hopeful about love.   Callie deserves a little happy.
Owen and Cristina are still in pain, however.  I am rooting for them and you should be too.   He’s a good man, that Owen.  He’s good for Cristina.  And, if they can get past the choking, maybe they will make it.
But I’m coming back to Mer and Der.  Happy.  Completely and totally happy.  Which is rare for anyone.  But shocking for Meredith and Derek.  They really are soul mates. And they really are perfect for one another.
I had a point.
So, what’s left?  The final two episodes.  Will Mer and Der get married?  Will Izzie live?  Will Owen and Cristina get together?  What’s going to happen to Bailey?  To George? To everyone?
There’s a point to that too.  You watch and you’ll see.
Thank you.  From the bottom of my heart.  For all 100 times you’ve watched.  For all 100 more you watch in the future.
I’m grateful.

Blogging from FLORIDA!

Blogging from FLORIDA!

Yes, finally, I've had the time to get a post together!  This trip has been a whirlwind so far, but no one ever said Disney World was a relaxing destination.  Definitely amazing and magical and special and fun, but just not really by definition, "relaxing."  Picture it - screaming and children and lines and crowds and parades and 95* weather and walking and shows and humidity and overtired people of all ages.  Oh and overpriced food.  Lots of overpriced everything.

Just a side note, Jonathan posted 3 videos in the post below this, and we made them at EPCOT.   Aren't they fun?  Also, I am vlogging almost every day, but the connection isn't cooperating with uploading my videos (and pictures), so words will have to do.  :)

Well, we're staying at the Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa as I said the last time I posted (the night before I left for Florida)  We got in on Tuesday, and first checked in and explored our beautiful condo.

We were starving, so we ate lunch at the Artist's Palette, a casual restaurant in our hotel.  There were little easels at the tables for kids to draw pictures, so of course, Nikki and I couldn't resist and picked up some crayons and went to work.  A cast member saw us and excitedly told us we were both the artists of the day!  She took us to the middle of the restaurant where we held up our pictures while she yelled, "Ladies and gentlemen, today is extra special because we have not one, but two artists of the day!"  Everyone applauded and we got little certificates and lots of stickers.  Yeah, we're just so cool like that.

After getting settled in, we caught a boat from our hotel to Downtown Disney where we spent the late afternoon and evening, eating at the Rainforest Cafe and shopping around Disney's busy, bustling shopping-dining-entertainment district.  Once we were overtired, or far past it, we caught a bus back "home."  Then we slept.  Until the sun came up.

Wednesday, we started our vacation off with the biggest dose of Disney possible: the Magic Kingdom.  We braved the May heat and rode rides, saw shows, and sat for an hour to reserve our prime parade-viewing spot.  We met characters, got run over by strollers, ate Mickey ice cream sandwiches, and made a few wishes.

Poppop was supposed to come up from his home in Port Charlotte and meet us on Thursday for a day at EPCOT, his favorite park, and dinner at Cape May at the Yacht & Beach Club Resort.  We thought he might enjoy an extra day at Disney, so we asked him if he'd like to stay 2 nights with us instead of 1 and join us at our day at the Magic Kingdom.  Of course, he was as excited as a little kid and arrived within a couple hours.  While we were waiting for him to arrive via train into ToonTown, I bought myself the coolest Minnie ears ever (a headband with two ears and a bow, of course!) and greeted him in style.  I paraded all around the park in them, totally getting into the Disney spirit!

Well, the excitement and miles of walking and the cute flats I just had to wear... well yes, you guessed it.  Blisters and sore feet.  :(  Solution? The Crocs outlet store!  Yay! My fantabulous father took me to the Orlando Premium Outlets (the 2nd biggest outlet shopping center in the country!) where I found some cute pink and white Crocs flip-flops.  So comfy.  :)

For dinner, everyone else caught a snack at the Artist's Palette, and Dad and I just ate in the room.  Lazy.  Then bedtime.

Thursday was EPCOT day.  We spent the morning in Future World and then made our way to the World Showcase, where we stayed until it was time for dinner at Cape May, one of our favorite Disney restaurants.  We all stuffed ourselves at their delicious buffet, and then we hurried over to the Magic Kingdom to see Wishes, their nighttime fireworks production, after we saw from afar Spectromagic, Disney's amazing illuminated parade.

Wishes was the highlight of the evening, and it was just as - if not more - magical as it was when I was about 3 feet tall.  Not only was the show spectacular, but just seeing the fireworks overtop Cinderella Castle and hearing the familiar, comforting Disney score was enough to culminate about a thousand emotions and memories, almost making me forget that life is not what it was when I really did believe Minnie Mouse was my best friend and Cinderella, duh, lived in that pretty castle.  Life was so simple back then, and even though I dealt with many things in my childhood, Disney World was always our safe haven.  Always.  It was a completely separate world where nothing was wrong, the princess always married the prince, and good always prevailed.  I'll never forget how devastated I was when I first saw a zipper on the back of one of the character's costumes.  That was the first day I ever thought about my "carafer friends" (as I called them in my evening prayers) not being real.  The first day I realized the simple days were then and forever completely over.  So anyhow, that's why Wishes was truly a magical experience for being much more than a simple fireworks show.  (Not to mention that the word "simple" is not in Disney's vocabulary... these fireworks were breathtaking!)

After the show, we joined the massive sea of people sleepwalking out of the Magic Kingdom.  We waited in an unbelievably long line to catch a bus back home, and once we did arrive, we were pretty much in bed and asleep in no time.

I slept in until 11am on Friday while my family went to check out the pool.  When I woke up and joined them, I heard that they had just met Shane Minor, a famous country songwriter.  (He wrote two Number One singles: "Brand New Girlfriend" and "Beautiful Mess," as well as songs like "She Thinks She Needs Me," and "International Harvester.")  Apparently, Shane gave my dad and sister his phone number and said to call anytime we wanted to come back to Nashville.  He said we could stay at his ranch and see the recording studio.  He also assured us that if we ever needed country concert tickets, he could hook us up.

We always seem to meet random interesting people on vacation.  Anyways...

Not too long after I eventually got to the pool, the Florida heat became a little too much, so we went to the Contemporary Resort to rent a boat.  We sailed around Disney's Seven Seas Harbor, passing by the Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Wedding Chapel, and Magic Kingdom a few times.  The breeze alleviated the intense heat, and we enjoyed relaxing on the water.  Once we were done, we headed back to the room to get cleaned up and choose a restaurant for dinner.  We knew we wanted to go somewhere outside Disney, and Dad had his mind set on a fancy steakhouse.  We narrowed our options down to a few before finally deciding on Vito's Chop House across Orlando.  Dad enjoyed his zillion-course meal and ate until he couldn't eat anymore.  And with that, the once-per-vacation, over-the-top, enjoy-it-just-to-make-Dad-happy, fancy-schmancy dinner requirement was sufficiently satisfied.

After dinner, we planned on going shopping, and thankfully Mom remembered that Star Trek was out.   We pulled into the nearby Cinemark and of course, there were several showings, and Dad was just in time for one of them.  We dropped him off, and he was so excited to see the movie he's been waiting on for months.  Of course, all involved parties were extremely happy with that arrangement.  Dad didn't have to go shopping, we didn't have to feel rushed with Dad dying for us to quit shopping, Dad got to see his movie, and well, it just really worked out.

We girls went to 2 outlet malls, Festival Bay and Orlando Prime Outlets. We went to Festival Bay just for one store - Nikki has been wanting to go to a Ron Jon Surf Shop for years so we let her experience the surfy-goodness of Ron Jon for the first time. before heading down the street to Orlando Prime Outlets.  Nikki was excited to go to Under Armour, Oakley, and all her sports stores, Mom was hoping to find some new sunglasses, and I was just eager to shop at their impressive list of stores. While I paraded around Coach and Victoria's Secret, Nikki bought new Nikes and 2 pairs of Oakleys.  I helped Mom pick out 2 new pairs of totally cute sunglasses, both polarized, one photochromatic, and Mom helped Nikki choose the Oakleys while I was off shopping on my own again.  We all spent about $150 each and were totally elated about our deals.  I got a new Coach bag and datebook - both 50% off - and Haagen-Dasz too.  Not bad, right?

It came time to pick up Dad, so we did just that and got to hear all about how great he thought the movie of his favorite TV show was.  On the way back home, we stopped at the huge 2-story McDonalds that Nana and Poppop used to take us to as kids.  Definite fun.  Then, of course, same story... we were sooo exhausted so we pretty much went right to bed.  Well after I saw Thursday's Grey's Anatomy of course.  (Of course, no DVR on vacation... so getting my show was quite a feat: 2 failed download attempts, 2 software issues, 3 software downloads, and a way too amazing fiance.... I might add)  The 100th episode was so great, and all of the actors were phenomenal as usual, and I cried and cried because there was a wedding and a romantic-heart-wrenching scene or two (Katherine Heigl is amazing!!), and well you get the idea.

Onto Saturday?  Well today is going to be another craaaazay day!  I don't know why, but if last week was any indication, well, I just know it.  :)  I have a dinner date with Cinderella and I am visiting Minnie Mouse, so at least two great things will be happening for sure!  I think we might go to Animal Kingdom for a couple hours and go back to the Magic Kingdom, but we'll see.  Tomorrow we'll be at Disney Hollywood Studios, and Monday we'll be relaxing at the pool and maybe shopping while Dad goes fishing.  We're hoping to have a last relaxing day before flying back home.

I miss my two furbaby princesses and my fiance and my Itty Bitties and my friends and my family and everyone, but I am actually having an amazing time, and I'm enjoying the break from the life I have back home.  I'm trying not to even think about things I have to do or appointments I have to make or phone calls I have to return.  This is my week of peace from the insanity, and this is my special time in my special magical place.  I'm trying to make wishes and dream dreams and do everything this place stands for.  It's all in the perspective, you know?  And Minnie ears definitely help.  ;-)

So until next time.... have a magical weekend, and ponder these words:

You never know the biggest day of your life is going to be the biggest.  The days you think are going to be big ones, they're never as big as you make them out to be in your head.  It's the regular days, the ones that start out normal, those are the days that end up being the biggest.

You don't recognize the biggest day of your life until you're right in the middle of it, the  day you commit to something or someone, the day you get your heart broken, the day you meet your soulmate, the day you realize there's not enough time because you want to live forever.  Those are the biggest days, the perfect days, you know?

{{Izzie, Grey's Anatomy 5.22 }}

Watch the beautiful ending of Thursday's Grey's Anatomy, you know, where vulnerable, scared Izzie cries and then succumbs to what is beyond her control. Watch Alex.  Watch him feel her pain and see beyond what she sees.  That most perfect kind of love you think is only on shows like this?  Well, that's the love I am blessed beyond words to have.   The love I will never take for granted.  The love that I share with a guy that I am, at the moment, missing entirely way too much. <3

Everything on Friday!

It's catch up time on the blog! Lots of stuff going on,
and Baby Itty Bitty is
finally taking a nap.  So here we go...

To update you on the drama at my school, here's an email we all got from the President of our university (lol):
An event intended to celebrate the end of the semester grew out of control this weekend.  While the event was a private party and not a university-sponsored activity, obviously many Kent State students were involved.
Today, university and community officials are exploring what happened and making plans to prevent an occurrence like this from happening in the future.
We are grateful that no one was seriously injured during the incident. And while the events are disappointing, they only strengthen our efforts to work hand-in-hand with the city to aid in the growth of the greater Kent community as we strive to be responsible neighbors.
We have enjoyed an outstanding level of town-gown cooperation in recent years, and our successful work will continue.  The actions of those involved should not taint the wonderful work being done daily by diligent and committed Kent State students, faculty and staff.
Unfortunately, lost is the news of the great accomplishments this weekend by our students.  One example is the student-sponsored Relay for Life event that again raised thousands of dollars to help fight the scourge of cancer.
Let's all learn what we can from these events and work to move forward together as a community.
             President Lester Lefton
There, now that makes everything all better doesn't it?  Oh, and we also got yelled at in our weekly email from him, and we got a "safety email" today on "being safe" this weekend.  Haha

On another note, check out Angie Smith's blog - she's up to something huge. Again. She's in India right now visiting the Compassion International projects.  This photo she took of the letters they translate just amazed me:

Down in Nicaragua, there's probably a similar stack of letters with mine to Julenia buried inside. People tirelessly translate these from English to whatever language they need to be.  Then when the children write their letters  back, they translate those into English and forward them onto the children's sponsors.  Isn't it amazing?

Next, let's see... Oh yes, the swine flu.  It was just a joke but now it's a reality.  As of this morning, there have been cases of Influenza A H1N1, a respiratory flu found in pigs that is now viable in humans, as seen in Arizona, California, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New York City, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas.  So why do we care?  Well I care because I have a myriad of chronic illnesses that make me susceptible to things like this.  And many of my readers share my struggle and are in the at-risk population as well.  51 cases alone have presented in New York City.  Why? How many people travel in and out of that city each day? Exactly. Then they travel to their home states and bring it to people there.  Then those people go on vacation or go out to eat or go wherever and send the nice little swine flu to some others.  So please people, cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze.  Then throw the tissue away or wash your hands for goodness' sakes.  Gross.   Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth.  Don't bite those fingernails and spare the pretty mascara by resisting to rub those eyes.  No picking your nose either. Gross again.  Because the person with swine flu sneezes on their hand, shakes yours, and then you yawn and touch your mouth.  See how easy this is?  But now if you have a cold, no need to worry either. To have H1N1, you'll likely have a temp over 100* as well as a cough or sore throat.  You'll also have done one of the following: been in contact with someone with swine flu or someone who was in contact with someone having swine flu, traveled to an area affected by swine flu in the 7 days preceding symptom onset, been in contact (within 6 feet) with someone who traveled to an area affected by swine flu, or are hospitalized with influenza or pneumonia.  So just be careful out there, chronic chicks.  If you think you're coming down with it, call your doctor immediately.  Oh, and obey the Feds and don't go to Mexico!  But above all, don't be too stressed over it.  Just use common sense. My dad spoke with family friend and world-renowned physician Dr. Alan Chow (who is a MD, PhD, OD and is cofounder of Optobionics, a company pioneering an implanted chip that make blind people see... not even kidding) and he confirmed what I had been suspecting... H1N1 is not a bad flu - it's just the flu, people.  You'll be better in a couple of days.  The only deaths have come from Mexicans and other people who likely cannot or did not access proper, current medical care in a timely manner.  Immunocompromised people, be extremely careful just as if you were around any other bug.  Get to the doctor if you show symptoms, and you should be all right.  Healthy individuals?  Same for you.  Either way, utilize the health-smart tips above just like you would for any other bug. It's going to be just fine.

Wednesday began Baby Time at the local library.  I enrolled Baby Itty Bitty and invited our friends Russ and Sam to do the same with their Madison.  So Wednesday morning for an hour, I sang goofy little songs, clapped and did motions, and held Baby Itty Bitty as she listened to the stories. (Okay, stared at other babies, etc. while the lady read the stories...) Until she decided not sleeping during morning naptime was a bad idea afterall and began to squirm and fuss.  (Don't worry, "Itsy Bitsy Spider" cured the issue...)  Meanwhile, Maddie spent the morning stealing the show and determinedly eating her pacifier and drooling all over the place. The next several Wednesday mornings should be fun for sure.  Next week, we get a new room and will add toys, more interaction, and a "water table" to our stories and songs.  Yay! :)

My parents just got back from Chicago and I'm jealous.  But I shouldn't be because I'm leaving for Disney World on Tuesday!  Although I'm stressed because there's so much to do and not enough time!

Craigslist and Freecycle ROCK.  And thrift and consignment stores, too.  Just saying.  For the past few months, I've collected a desk, books, clothes, fabric, toys, Easter and Christmas decorations, crafts, a dollhouse, a TV/VCR combo, things to redecorate, Ikea bookcase doors, and so much more.. all for FREE!  I've given away toys, clothes, a vacuum, baby stuff, etc., and I've gotten absolute steals on lots of baby gear (swings, DVDs, a BundleMe, a Bumbo and tray...) an Ikea bookcase, Cavs tickets, books, clothes, and I could go on forever.  I've sold a chair, baby items, craft items, and even my printer combo.  I have tons of pending sales, too, including my parents' old pool pump.  Crazy or what?  Maybe... but definitely fun!!

Still reading My Sister's Keeper and re-reading A Grief Observed. 2 amazing books.  I absolutely cannot wait for My Sister's Keeper's movie to come out this June! (Even if it has a different ending...) I started the book a long time ago and didn't get a chance to finish it, so this is the perfect excuse to pick it up again.  You should read it too - this book will move you and shake you to the core.  I don't really think I'm biased just because I'm sick and I have a sister and I've lived glimpses of this family's lives.  I think it would be unimaginable and hard for anyone, not just someone partially living the life.  Can you imagine being created to be a genetic match for a cancer-ridden sister... so your cells and organs and tissues could in many ways cure her most of the times she got sick?  Going to the hospital each time she had to?  In the book/movie, the girl essentially decides to sue her parents for the rights to her own body... all while she loves her sister.  Wrap your head around that one.  And of course Jodi Picoult is a master author.  So just read it.  And check out the trailer:

Oh and I must give a shoutout to my nerdy fiance.  Jonathan found this funny video by College Humor called Twitter in Real Life.  If you're into Twitter, you'll totally get this... it made me "lol" :)

Speaking of Twitter... you so should be following me....

K, so Grey's Anatomy last night???  Episode 99 was one of the best in a long time!  And I'm so, so excited for Episode 100 - if you want a spoiler, click here.  Shonda Rimes confirmed that Denny will definitely be in the episode, and she also added, "Just a reminder: He's not a ghost, and we should all remember what his appearance means." Interpret that one how you will... either Izzie's mets are back making her nuts, or well... he's come to take her... they will finally be together.  But back to last night.  Krista Vernoff came back to write and the scenes with Izzie and her mom, Meredith and little Maddy, Meredith and Richard... well, there were lots of amazing scenes.  Even though lately Grey's has deviated from episodes with obviously resonating themes, throughout this episode, a few ideas were repeatedly apparent: acceptance, forgiveness, and making amends. I loved how Meredith risked her job to tell Maddy's mom, "You have to change her story while you still have a chance... for her, but for your little girl, you have to change her story."  The whole idea of a little girl shooting her dad 17 times to save her mom from her dad, now that's controversial.  For standing up for a 6 year old murderer, now that's Meredith Grey. I love how Meredith is all "dark and twisty," you never know where she's going next or how she's going to react.  She's not afraid to surprise people, and she's not afraid to run or hide when it's the best thing she can do.  I can relate to Meredith.
But anyways, change their stories...  Hindsight is 20/20 but I know my story could have been changed, and maybe yours could have been, too.   Instead of letting that realization hurt (I'd never in my life thought of it that way), embrace the realization that all adults change the stories of each and every child they ever get to know, and you have the power to give a child a happier ending, a brighter beginning.

Oh and any Private Practice watchers reading? How about that season finale?! I knew it from the time I saw that psychotic woman appear back on the episode... Chills!

Happy weekend!!
